Russo Brothers Say Robert Downey Jr. Is ‘Writing Backstory’ For Doctor Doom Before Avengers: Doomsday

Robert Downey Jr., the acclaimed actor who brought Iron Man to life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), is diving deep into his next big role as Doctor Doom for the 2026 film Avengers: Doomsday. The 59-year-old Oscar winner, who last appeared as Tony Stark in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, is making a surprising return to the superhero franchise, this time as the iconic villain. With filming set to begin soon, directors Joe and Anthony Russo recently shared details about Downey’s intense preparation process, highlighting his active involvement in crafting the character.

The Russo brothers, who previously helmed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, are back to direct Avengers: Doomsday, and its 2027 follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars. In a new interview, they revealed how committed Downey is to his new role. “He is so immersed in it. He is so dialed in,” Joe Russo said, emphasizing the actor’s dedication. He went on to explain that Downey isn’t just waiting for instructions; he’s taking the lead. “He’s writing backstory, costume ideas,” Joe added, showcasing how the star is shaping every aspect of Doctor Doom, from his origins to his look.

Anthony Russo chimed in, praising Downey’s creative energy. “That’s the kind of artist he is. That’s the kind of actor he is,” he said, noting that this hands-on approach is typical of the performer. Joe elaborated further, suggesting Downey sees a unique chance to explore a complex figure. “I think he just loves really rich three-dimensional characters and I think he sees a real opportunity here with that character,” he stated. The directors also shared that they were on a call with Downey just hours before the interview, discussing his ideas for the role.

Downey’s return to the MCU was first announced in July 2024, shocking fans who thought his Iron Man days were over after Tony Stark’s emotional exit in Endgame. Now, as Doctor Doom, a classic Fantastic Four foe, he’s set to bring a fresh dynamic to the franchise. With Avengers: Doomsday hitting theaters on 1 May 2026, anticipation is building for how Downey will redefine this legendary villain under the Russo brothers’ direction.
