Kangana Ranaut, current Member of Parliament from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, resolved a long-standing defamation dispute with veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar. The settlement, finalized on 28 February 2025, brings an end to a legal battle that began in 2020, stemming from comments Ranaut made during a television interview. The case, which had been a point of contention between the two celebrities, concluded amicably outside the courtroom, marking a significant development in their public feud.
The defamation suit originated when Javed Akhtar filed a complaint against Ranaut following her appearance on a news channel in July 2020. During the interview, she linked Akhtar to the suicide of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, alleging that the lyricist was part of a “coterie” in Bollywood that ostracized outsiders. Akhtar, offended by the remarks, sought legal action, claiming they damaged his reputation. Ranaut, in response, filed a counter-complaint, accusing Akhtar of extortion and intimidation, further escalating the conflict. The case had been winding through Mumbai’s courts, with both parties exchanging legal volleys until this recent resolution.
On 28 February 2025, Akhtar’s lawyer confirmed the settlement, stating, “The matter has been settled out of court amicably between Mr. Javed Akhtar and Ms. Kangana Ranaut.” Details of the agreement remain undisclosed, but it’s clear the two have chosen to bury the hatchet. Ranaut addressed the resolution publicly, saying, “I have apologised for all the inconvenience caused due to my statements to Mr. Javed Akhtar and his family and friends circle.”
Now 37, Ranaut has been balancing her Bollywood career with her political responsibilities since winning the Mandi Lok Sabha seat as a BJP candidate in 2024. Meanwhile, Akhtar continues his legacy as a screenwriter and poet. The settlement avoids a trial that was set to begin soon, sparing both parties further legal proceedings. Ranaut’s lawyer had previously indicated her willingness to resolve the matter, noting, “Kangana has agreed to tender an apology to end this matter once and for all.”
