Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt is currently ruling over the internet for her much-awaited, highly anticipated debut at the 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. All four of her outfits managed to leave a mark on social media, with netizens buzzing about her charm and elegance on the red carpet. It was, however, her Gucci outfit that has now caused a stir. During her interviews at the prestigious event, the actress revealed that it was the brand’s interpretation of a saree.
However, while sharing her photos from the red carpet, on Instagram, Gucci called her outfit a ‘gown,’ which has not gone down well with the netizens. While the fashion house is yet to comment on it all, her fans were left unimpressed as they schooled them. Sharing her photo, they wrote in the caption, “Global Brand Ambassador Alia Bhatt attended the closing ceremony of the 78th Cannes Film Festival in a custom Gucci gown with embroidered crystals in a GG Monogram pattern. The actress was also pictured in a custom three-piece set.”

As soon as the post went viral, netizens rushed to the comment section of the post to correct them. One wrote, “Gown? That’s a lehenga.” Another wrote, “Its a sari/ lehenga not a gown.” One commented, “That’s a gucci lehenga, let’s get this nomenclature right, but wow I’m obsessed!” Another commented, “It looks great, but let’s be clear – it’s a lehenga. Kindly requesting Gucci to acknowledge this cultural heritage appropriately.” One said, “Your brand ambassador herself @aliaabhatt says on the red carpet it’s an @gucci interpretation of a saree and so please correct the reference or else it’s something not worth sharing. Give the due credits of inspiration. Being such a global brand @gucci shall be not represented as something not worthy of.”
On the work front, Alia Bhatt was last seen in Vasant Bala’s Jigra, alongside Vedang Raina. She will be next seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love & War, co-starring Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal in lead roles. She also has YRF’s spy universe film Alpha, Ayan Mukerji’s Brahmastra franchise, and Farhan Akhtar’s Jee Le Zaraa, co-starring Priyanka Chopra and Katrina Kaif in her pipeline. It is to be noted that the last project has been put on hold, according to the filmmakers.

She had attended the closing ceremony of Cannes 2025 as the brand ambassador of Loreal Paris. This marked her much-awaited debut at the prestigious film festival. Apart from the Gucci saree, she also wore a Schiaparelli haute couture gown, a dazzling black Armani Prive backless dress, and a bright yellow Gucci co-ord set.
