The 97th Academy Awards, held on 2 March 2025 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, celebrated a dynamic year in cinema, with comedian Conan O’Brien hosting for the first time. The night’s biggest winner was Anora, a dramedy about a sex worker marrying a Russian oligarch’s son, which scooped five Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director for Sean Baker, Best Actress for Mikey Madison, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing.
Baker’s haul tied a record for the most wins by an individual for one film in a single night. The Brutalist earned three awards, with Adrien Brody taking Best Actor for his role as a Holocaust-surviving architect. Supporting acting honors went to Zoe Saldaña for Emilia Pérez, which also won Best Original Song for El Mal, and Kieran Culkin for A Real Pain.
Despite leading with 13 nominations, Emilia Pérez secured only two wins. Other highlights included I’m Still Here as Best International Feature, Flow as Best Animated Feature, and No Other Land as Best Documentary. The ceremony, aired live on ABC and streamed on Hulu, paid tribute to Los Angeles firefighters amid recent wildfires, blending glitz with heartfelt moments.
