Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan is currently at the hospital recuperating from being stabbed multiple times. He even underwent multiple surgeries to remove a piece of knife that was lodged in his spine. On Sunday, Mumbai police arrested the primary accused behind the attack and sent him to a five-day police custody. Hinting at an ‘international conspiracy’ angle, they highlighted that the accused was from Bangladesh. However, now his lawyer has claimed that the statements made by the police are bogus and that they “have no proof that he is a Bangladeshi.”
It was reported that the authorities told the court that the accused, identified as Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, entered India illegally from Bangladesh and has been living in the country for six months. Dismissing the claims, his lawyer Sandeep Shekhare shared that the police have no proof of him being a Bangladeshi. He even refuted that statement and added that Shehzad has been living in India for more than seven years, along with his family. He added, “This is a clear-cut violation of 43A. No proper investigation has been done.”

Opening up about the ‘international conspiracy’ angle pointed out by Mumbai police, Shekhare said that it happened just because he was in Bangladesh before coming here. In an interview with the news agency ANI, quoted by the Free Press Journal, the lawyer said, “Saif Ali Khan has never made any statement or does not have any grievance with anyone that would create a threat for him from any state, Bangladesh or any other country. He does not have any international cases. They changed the angle of the case just because he (the accused) is Bangladeshi… Earlier, he was in Bangladesh but he has been living here for many years now. Police said he has been living here for 6 months, that is not true.”
During the hearing in court, Kishor Patil, public prosecutor, revealed that Shehzad knew he was entering a celeb’s house. A police officer involved in the investigation stated that he had “scaled the building’s compound wall” from a nearby street. Since the guard was fast asleep, he proceeded to climb a part of the building wall using a drainpipe. He took the stairs and used a duct to reach the 54-year-old actor’s bathroom. “He most likely carried tools to open the bathroom window,” added the officer.

As he jumped into the bathroom, the noise woke up Jeh’s nanny who was sleeping in his room. She raised an alarm, which brought Khan to the scene where he was stabbed by the accused, who then proceeded to take the same route to escape.
According to a report by the Free Press Journal, the officer revealed that the building’s security was inadequate. Since the CCTV system was outdated, they wasted two to three hours trying to recover the password of the system, which no one knew, so that they could get access to the footage.
Shehzad reportedly worked with a housekeeping company in Thane. He was arrested on January 19 at a labour near a metro construction site at the Hiranandani Estate. As per a new update on the matter, the accused will be taken to Saif’s residential apartment in Bandra, in the next five days to recreate the crime scene as a part of the investigation.
